A delegation from the Indian government is visiting Galicia to closely study the Blue Growth strategy of the port of Vigo, selected by the FAO as an international benchmark
The Government of India has chosen the Port of Vigo as a model for modernizing its fishing infrastructure based on responsible practices. This initiative, promoted by the Indian government in conjunction with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), gives new impetus to the Vigo port authority's international profile and positions it as a global leader in port governance and the blue economy.
This week, a high-level delegation from India toured Vigo and other locations in Galicia to learn firsthand about the practices that have made the port a pioneer in applying the Blue Growth approach. The group, comprised of representatives from the Indian central government and two pilot fishing ports, was received by the President of the Vigo Port Authority, Carlos Botana, with the aim of exploring the Blue Port model that the Vigo terminal began developing in 2016.
Vigo was chosen because of its role as a European laboratory for innovation in fishing and sustainability. The Indian delegation will analyze flagship projects such as Lonja 4.0, an example of digitalization, traceability, and energy efficiency that aims to reduce emissions by 37% and cover one-fifth of its energy consumption with solar power. These types of initiatives are key to India's interest, as it seeks to transform its fishing ports into more competitive, resilient, and environmentally friendly spaces.
The visit is part of the FAO's Blue Ports Initiative, of which Vigo is a leading advocate, along with the Xunta de Galicia (Galician Regional Government). The program aims to help fishing ports worldwide evolve toward models that generate economic, social, and environmental value for their communities. After their visit to Vigo, the delegation completed its agenda with technical visits to Baiona and Cambados, as well as meetings with the shipbuilding sector and fishing companies to explore potential synergies.
With this collaboration, the Port of Vigo consolidates its leadership in maritime sustainability and reinforces its role as an exporter of knowledge at a time when India is seeking to accelerate its transition to more responsible fishing.
