The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, presented the new Asia-Pacific Strategy to the Council of Ministers. This roadmap will guide Spain's actions regarding this region over the coming years, until 2029.
The Minister emphasized that the main lines of action focus on deepening political relations and economic ties to "align our interests, objectives, and strategic actions with a region central to contemporary geopolitics and geoeconomics." He also stressed that, at this time, "Asia-Pacific is acquiring increasing prominence thanks to its demographic, economic, and technological weight."
Among the initiatives included in the document are the celebration of the Spain-India Dual Year 2026, as well as the creation of a ministerial commission on Asian affairs and the strengthening of Spain's diplomatic presence in the region, which already includes 15 embassies, three diplomatic offices, and nine consulates general.
On December 2nd, José Manuel Albares outlined the main points of the Strategy to Asian ambassadors, following a series of consultations he held during his visits to countries such as China, India, and Pakistan, as well as bilateral meetings with his counterparts in the region.
