Spanish insurer Mapfre enters the Indian reinsurance market

The company is confident it will soon obtain regulatory approval and open its own office before April 1st.

Spanish insurance company Mapfre has announced its intention to enter the Indian reinsurance market. According to the business daily El Economista, Mapfre plans to open a new branch in the Asian country, whose government has established advantages for operators that set up operations in India rather than operating remotely: Indian companies will give priority to offers from reinsurers based in the country.

The newspaper reports that Mapfre expects to have its own office in India before April 1st, once it has obtained approval from the Indian regulator. Mapfre's entry into India comes exactly one year after its arrival in the Chinese market. The insurer also has a representative office in Japan and a presence in Malaysia. Mapfre RE, the reinsurance subsidiary, already operates in 19 markets in the region despite not having a physical presence there.

According to El Economista, the Asia-Pacific region accounts for 15% of the group's net reinsurance premiums. The opening of the branch in India will be the last step in its Asian expansion strategy. Mapfre will now focus on consolidating its business and implementing an organic growth plan.
