III Spain-India Forum: Latin America, the European Union and the Indo-Pacific

The Presidencies of the G20, the Pacific Alliance and the Council of the EU were the starting point to address the state of relations between Spain, India and Peru in the Indo-Pacific | Executive Summary III Spain-India Forum

In a session titled "Presidencies of G20, Pacific Alliance and Council of the EU:  Participation of Latin America and the European Union in the Indo-Pacific", a group of leading international thinkers met to analyse the state of relations and opportunities for cooperation between Spain, India and Peru in the Indo-Pacific, taking as a starting point the concurrence of these countries' presidencies of the Council of the EU, the G20, and the Pacific Alliance, respectively.

Javier Salido, Director General for North America, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, opened the session by reflecting on the strategic importance of Spain's partnership with India, delving into shared values and mutual complementarities. Complementing this intervention, the Ambassador of India to Spain, Dinesh Patnaik, delved into the multi-sectoral opportunities that both nations can take advantage of to provide the relationship with its deserved level of exchange and cooperation.

Leading the symposium, Shairee Malhotra, Associate Fellow, Europe at ORF & Taskforce Coordinator, Think20 India Secretariat, G20 India, moderated the session. Amaia Sánchez, Analyst for South Asia at the European Union Institute for Strategic Studies, explored the European perspective, together with Javier Gil, Professor and Indo-Pacific Expert at the Comillas University, enriching the dialogue with an analysis of the strategic considerations surrounding the EU’s and Spain's involvement in the Indo-Pacific framework.

Sameer Patil, Deputy Director, ORF Mumbai & Taskforce Coordinator, T20 India Secretariat, gave an insight into India's evolving role in the Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific, as well as India's ambitions and contributions during its Presidency of the G20. Peru's Ambassador to India, Javier Paulinich, as Latin America's representative at the panel, identified possible avenues for greater joint engagement of Latin American nations and Spain in the Indo-Pacific region.

There was also time for an open discussion, where the panellists engaged in an exchange with the audience, underlining the need to foster collaborative frameworks between India, the EU and Latin America, transcending geographical borders.
