Indian MPs meet with SICF

The role of organisations such as the Council Foundation in consolidating bilateral relations was emphasised

The Spain India Council Foundation organised a meeting with a group of 18 Indian MPs led by Ananth Kumar, Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs andMinister of Chemicals and Fertilisers. The delegation was completed with officials and members of both houses of the Indian Government, as well as representatives of the Embassy of India to Spain.

SICF was represented by Chairman Antonio Escámez, SecretaryGeneral Alonso Dezcallar and CEOs and representatives of several patron companies and organisations: Casa Asia, Navantia, Acciona, Gas Natural, Indra, Abengoa, Global Cloud Xchange, CaixaBank, Instituto Cervantes, Casa de la India and Chaincorp.

In his opening remarks, Mr Escámez emphasised the strong relations between the two countries and mentioned the celebrations held throughout this year in both Spain and in India to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, in which some patrons– such as Casa de la India, Casa Asia and Instituto Cervantes– are especially engaged.

The Indian visitors said how pleased they were to have the chance to visit Spain and praised the actions of institutions such as the Spain India Council Foundation, which they said take “relations between the two countries to a whole new level”.

Mr Escámez took advantage of the meeting to invite the delegation to participate in the next Spain India Forum, which is set to take place in Madrid in the first half of 2017 with the slogan “Re-energizing our strategic ties” and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as co-organiser.

During the meeting, several aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed. The Spanish representatives gained an insight into how the government works in India, which is considered to be the largest democracy in the world, with around 20 official languages and over 1,600 dialects and mother tongues.
