Viswanathan Anand receives the II Spain India Council Foundation Award

On January 7, former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand was presented with the II Spain India Council Foundation Award. The event took place at the Residence of the Spanish Ambassador Gustavo de Arístegui in Delhi before a selected group of representatives of Indian civil society.

The Spain India Council Foundation Board decided to grant this award to Viswanathan Anand for his work towards promoting mutual knowledge between Spain and India, both through his outstanding and award-winning career as a professional chess-player and personally, as he spends his time between the two countries.

During the event, Ambassador Arístegui emphasised what a great example Anand offers to the societies of both countries through his work, humbleness and social commitment. Anand was grateful for the award and the recognition it represents in Spain and India alike.

The goal of this award is to recognise the work of the people that foster mutual understanding between Spain and India, which is closely linked to the Foundation's goals and mission - to bring the civil societies of the two countries closer together. In its first edition, the Award went to Indian conductor Zubin Mehta.
